Žnjan Beach in Split was created by reclaiming land from the sea. It has never been extensively developed and also serves as a parking area, giving it the social character of an urban beach frequented by the city’s less affluent residents. The subjects of the film are people – bathers captured with a powerful telephoto lens as they go about their usual activities on the beach.
Bathers, the sea, cars, and boats shimmer in the heat of a summer day like a moving Pointillist painting. Through their slow rhythm, they seem to create an image of existence stripped down to its bare essentials.
Boris Poljak
Boris Poljak (b. 1959) is a long-standing member of the Split Cinema Club, one of the initiators and organizers of the International Festival of New Film and Video in Split, and a long-time member of the Executive Board of the Croatian Film Association. Since 1991, he has worked as a professional cinematographer and has received numerous awards at Croatian and international festivals for his work, which includes more than 40 documentaries, two feature films, and over 200 commercials. He has directed the experimental short films Onkraj (2003) and Sky Spirits (2010), as well as the short documentary The Split Watercolour (2009).
