ROBOTIC SCULPTURES -Freerk Wiringa
The works shown at the Split Film Festival / International Festival of New Film are robotic sculptures; half sculpture, half robot. As an artist it is not my intention to build robots, it is my intention to create moving and interacting sculptures. In my work technical elements are used as sculptural material and are combined and placed in contrast with modelled pieces. Shape interpretation has a lot to do with association. Most of my works are created using steel. This material has some universal associations: hard, clinical, industrial, heavy and strong. These associations play a big part in how the works are interpreted by the viewer. In my work I combine sculptured steel parts with machine elements like aluminium pneumatic cylinders, cast aluminium valves, and plastic air tubes. The choice of iconic subjects and the enlargement of isolated emotions by size and choice of form, are typical in my oeuvre.
The sculptures I present at the International Festival of New Film all have the same subject; the human hand. But they are of different shape, size and technical philosophy.
