Jeem 1983 – Jorj Abou Mhaya

Jeem is set in 1983 war-torn Beirut and follows a seven-year-old boy as he wanders through his city during the Lebanese Civil Ear. With the help of a superhero from his imagination, Jeem brings a ceasefire to his shattered city, befriends other children and mocks armed militiamen. But as the ceasefire collapses, he must return home and face his deepest fear. Through Jeem’s eyes, we witness
the heavy toll of war on children and how a child’s imagination becomes an act of resistance.

Director

Jorj Abou Mhaya

Jorj is an animation film director, animator and graphic novelist. His work fuses visual artistry with political and social commentary. In 2018, he directed the animated feature film, Alephia 2053, which was hailed as a milestone in the genre. His artistic journey is also marked by his graphic novel, Ville Avoisinante La Terre, translated and published in the Middle East and abroad. Bou Mhaya’s current production slate includes an animated feature film, developed in collaboration with renowned director Nadine Labaki and composer Khaled Mouzanar.
